The Ikarian Wine Club was founded by George Karimalis and his wife Eleni when they returned to their native home to dedicate themselves to environmental work on their own land. Their aim is to operate the unit with the minimum possible impact on the environment by using sustainable energy and ecological practises.
The property is located to the Northwest side of the island, in the hill village of Pigi near the port of Evdilos.
Rural accommodation of real character
There are two sympathetically restored stone houses where small groups of guests can stay at any time of the year. The houses were built between 120 and 500 years ago - nobody's quite sure when!
Each has 3 rooms, 2 of which are comfortable bedrooms. Each has a large family-sized bathroom attached to the house and a spacious kitchen/living area with gas cooker, dishwasher, refrigerator, filter coffee maker (fair trade coffee provided) and toaster.
Both houses have an outdoor seating area with flower garden and enjoy stunning views over the vineyard to the Aegean sea. Guests can watch spectacular sunsets from their garden.
Traditional Farmhouse Restaurant
We cook and offer to our guests and visitors cuisine of the island. As one of the restaurant's main principles is to serve only very freshly prepared food, we use mainly organic products, many originating from our farm. Fish is sourced from local fishermen.
Winery
We continue a tradition of thousands of years of wine production. Our wine is created in the family winery with modern equipment. Our red wine is made from the local variety Reteno and is aged in oak barrels. It has a velvety texture coupled with aromas of cherry and berries. The Ikarian white wine “Euphoria” is full-bodied with the taste and aromas of citrus fruit, apple and white peach.
Organic Farm
The farm is certified as organic. The vineyards are planted mainly with local varieties of wine grapes but we also produce eating grapes, olives and other fruit, as well as various vegetables, aromatic plants, corn and beans. We also have milking animals and poultry.
Cookery and Wine Courses
During the cookery course you will learn about light Mediterranean cookery, which is a new and unique cooking style. In it we combine the taste of traditional Mediterranean recipes with the benefits of light cooking. During the wine course you will learn the basics of wine, its origins, its making and its varieties, starting from the very beginning. You will learn about the different styles of wines and the grapes used in them. You will learn step by step how to taste the wine and the special vocabulary of wine-tasting.
Our Environmental Policies
We compost all our organic waste. We recycle the rest of our waste. We try to reuse anything. We participate in the local recycling movement.
We clean and reuse almost all 'grey'water for watering plants . We collect rain water. We have our own spring to water our organic gardens.
We use energy-saving electrical items We do not use air conditioners as the stone houses have very good bioclimatic properties. A hybrid heating system (solar panels/wood) provides warm water all the year. It also provides heating in winter.
We produce electricity using photovoltaic panels. This a 5KV power station on the roof of the winery.
We support several initiatives against hunting. We do not allow hunting on our property.
We use only 100% biodegradable cleaning products.
All our buildings are mainly made from local materials (stones, wood, canes, sand etc). We also use cork and latex (in beds and floors). We also use copper (mainly pipes), bronze (mainly in doors and windows) and iron (in locally made articles).
