Olive is sometimes bought in from local sources. * Black water and grey water systems throughout the cortijada. * Black water from the toilets is carried to a 45000 litre septic tank from where it is delivered to two alternating vertical flow reed beds for aerobic treatment. From here it drains to a sludge bed to remove dead bacteria and then on to a large horizontal flow reed bed for anaerobic treatment. The end product is 98 percent clean and used for irrigating trees composite to land reclamation and anti-erosion systems. * Grey water from showers, baths, basins, the washing machine and dish washer, with the aid of ecological detergents, is filtered through straw and pine needles and used to irrigate a terraced orchard. Filter material is regularly replaced and composted. * Rainwater is harvested from the roof and channelled through a system of acequias to a 50,000 litre underground deposit. * All waste from ‘Los Gázquez’ is composted or recycled. * Food for the cortijada, as much as possible, is bought locally supporting the local economy and food culture.

Description

Cortijada Los Gázquez lies In the heart of the 'Parque Natural Sierra Maria, one of Spain’s most dramatic alpine deserts.

This ‘eco-chic’ guest house and 47 acre farm is set within a place of extreme natural beauty, profound peace and tranquillity and an awe inspiring wilderness.

Cortijada Los Gázquez combines two ideas fundamental for people who love peace, inspiration and the natural world: ecology and creativity.

Cortijada Los Gázquez is a 'carbon neutral' guest house sitting in a valley of almond and pine. Heat and light from the sun, thermal winds and wood from the land combine in a system of solar panels, wind mills and fires to cook and create energy. Rain water is harvested from the roof. Waste water is managed and utilised through a system of reed beds and a grey water recovery system is used to irrigate the dry land.

The Cortijada sits benignly in the mountains and when you look aloft to the Golden eagles in the sky, living at the apex of the food chain, you can be confident that your stay here will no more effect the natural ecology other than to serve it. Cortijada Los Gázquez's night sky is unpolluted by metropolitan light. On summer nights you can gaze at the stars for hours.

In the daytime the air is hot and suffused with the pungent scent of pine trees. With an average rainfall of 400mm skies are nearly always blue and sunlight is bountiful. Winters are short and can be cold whilst summers are long and hot.

The combination of all these elements has made Los Gázquez an ideal location to exploit the natural resources which are so abundant here. Resources necessary to create power to a place remote and fully independent from the grid.

However, at Cortijada Los Gázquez, being environmentally and socially responsible needn't compromise a love of design.

These were once five old farm houses, a cortijada, now converted into one very beautiful space. Great respect has been given to the simple vernacular architecture of the building, and a crisp eye for detail has been employed which makes the place seem stunningly modern.

Here you will find uncomplicated luxury with minimal intent. And here you will find peace of mind, body and spirit. As a creative retreat Cortijada Los Gázquez is a place for the expression of art, design and creativity in all it’s forms. It is a place where people can withdraw from everyday life and focus creativity in a culturally stimulating environment.
