We take actions to: conserve heat, conserve water, install eco-friendly lighting, reduce oil/gas carbon emissions, compost waste food, recycle wherever possible, use reclamation building materials, source food locally, offer local employment, instruct staff in green practices, conserve/care for wildlife in our area, -|- The horses are bred locally and the farm is the source of employment for a number of local people. The farm believes in totally organic farming;we do not use any growth hormones, pesticides, insecticides or chemical fertilizers. We are careful not to overgraze and keep the stocking rate to a minimum level that allows the natural grasses to regenerate. The cattle and horses are free range and the cattle eat back certain paddocks to build natural firebreaks in the winter. -|- Shooting is banned on the farm and wild animals are 'protected' including the Puma who on average kills one foal a year and an unknown number of calves! Dead cattle or horses are left to enter the food chain. This policy encourages condors, vultures, foxes and other wild life. -|- Food is sourced locally and all waste, washing etc. is sensitive to the local environment. Although recycling is just beginning in Argentina, bottles are recycled and we take wine bottles back to the winery to fill up with Los Potreros wine! Most energy is naturally produced (90% wind or solar generated), but a generator is used for back up purposes. -|- The farm supports the local school; donations are in kind and they work on various improvement projects including the water works, building an oven, providing cooking pots and pans, first aid kits and solar energy system.

Description

Estancia Los Potreros dates from 1574 when breeding mules for the silver mines in Peru was the principal activity. Today it is an idyllic retreat for horsemen and nature lovers.

This organic working farm, breeds Aberdeen-Angus cattle and Paso Peruano horses. It has been in the same Anglo Argentina family for four generations and sets the highest standards of accommodation, combining the pleasures of estancia life with exceptional riding. .

The owners have a passion for conservation and the preservation of the environment. They cherish the farm's “spring water” and use wind and solar energy. Home rides, long-distance pack trips, polo, assisting the gauchos with cattle or simply relaxing by the pool are some of the many activities.

The riding terrain is exciting, ranging from steep rocky paths down tree-studded gullies, to open, grassy hilltops. This is a small family-run business, where tourism blends in carefully with the working cattle farm (Aberdeen Angus) and stud farm and works in symbiosis with the local eco-systems. Tourists are encouraged to learn about the region and all activities are focused on enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

Los Potreros is a year round destination known for its fabulous horses and animal welfare. "The adventure allows you to experience the best traditions of Argentina while not abandoning all creature comforts.”
