Once upon a time Gino and Rina Tassi lived and worked on the land at Podere La Casellina. Sixty years later, in 1996, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, knocking down a wall to make a room big enough for the celebrations.
But then Gino died and his grandson, Michelangelo, desperate to keep the place going, persuaded the family to let him try his hand at living off the land in the time-honoured way, while taking in guests. This brave endeavour is a testimonial to the life his grandparents, and others like them, had lived.
Anyone wishing to see the raw and honest side of Tuscan life, and learn something of its history, should come here; tourists more comfortable with the face-lifted Tuscany of holiday brochures need not apply.
Little has changed, either inside or out, and there are few concessions to modernity. To stay here is to experience first-hand the changing pattern of the seasons. Learn to prune vines, help plant bulbs, pick olives, gather mushrooms - make yourself useful.
Michelangelo swears by a breakfast of raw egg yolks and Vin Santo to keep your strength up!
