In 1900 there were 10,000 water and windmills in Britain.Today there are fewer than 100 working water mills.Burcott Mill is one of the very few remaining working water-powered flour mills in the UK.
Milling wheatgrain into flour using waterpower and stones was introduced into England by the Romans 2,000 years ago. There has been a mill on this site for half that time - over 1,000 years. The Domesday Book (1086) records that the Bishop of Wells owned 4 mills and historians have confirmed that Burcott Mill was one of them. Our flour is produced by passing organic English wheat grain between two millstones, one on top of the other. At Burcott Mill we specialise in producing organic wholemeal flour, which means the entire wheat grain is included in our flour. Nothing is added, and nothing removed. We use high protein organic English wheat grain, which produces strong flour, ideal for breadmaking.
The Miller's House is a charming Grade II listed building adjoining the Mill. Your hosts are Lesley and Ian Burt.
There are six guest rooms each offering comfortable and private facilities. Four are family rooms. Two are located on the ground floor, one with disabled access. All our rooms have TV, DVD & Freeview, complimentary tea/coffee, a clock radio, individually controlled heating and hairdryer. We have a self-catering apartment for short breaks and longer holidays. For the comfort and safety of all our guests we do not permit smoking indoors.
Our breakfasts are highly praised by our guests. We offer a selection of locally made organic yoghurts, marmalades, honey and West Country honey-roast sausages and bacon to go with your free range eggs, and of course our wholemeal bread is made by a local baker using our own flour.
Mill Lodge – our self-catering house - links two of the mill's working areas - the Stone Floor where our flour is made and, above it, the Granary where our wheat grain is stored. From the privacy of your accommodation, you have exclusive viewing onto the stone floor.
On one level there is an open plan kitchen and dining area, twin bedroom, and bathroom. Upstairs is the living room (double sofa bed) with exposed beams and stone walls, and a galleried play area.
