Stretching over 25 000 hectares of prime wildlife area, Shamwari Game Reserve is one of the largest private conservation initiatives in Southern Africa.
The reserve is situated in verdant bush along the Bushmans River, halfway between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown, a pleasant drive from Cape Town, forming a natural extension to the famous Garden Route, in the malaria-free Eastern Cape Province.
With five of South Africa’s eight vegetation types, Shamwari is a sanctuary for a variety of game and birdlife. The abundance of game that roam free under the unrelenting Africa sun, takes one back to a forgotten era – a time of hunters and the hunted, where survival was the destiny of only the fittest.
Now, Shamwari, which means “my friend” in Shona, is where guests and wildlife live in harmony. It is about conserving a vanishing way of life and is the realisation of one man’s dream, and the success of many people’s passion.
At Shamwari we constantly aim to improve the “Eco-tourism experience”. We continue on our mission “to conserve a vanishing way of life” by enlarging the reserve, as adjacent farms become available, thereby setting aside a larger area of land for conservation purposes.
Shamwari’s most recent acquisition, 3000 hectares of pure wilderness area, is one way in which the reserve continues on its quest to ‘lead by example’. .
Shamwari Game Reserve won “Africa’s Leading Conservation Company” and “Africa’s Leading Safari Lodge” for its pioneering work in conservationat the World Travel Awards in Johannesburg, 2010.
